Clark County Desert Conservation Areas
Clark County desert conservation areas, NV
Overview
Beyond the managed parks, much of Clark County is protected or managed desert habitat, including conservation areas designated to protect the Mojave desert tortoise and other native species. These areas surround the Las Vegas Valley on several sides and offer dispersed, undeveloped recreation rather than facilities or marked trails.
Why Visit
They represent the actual Mojave desert at the edge of the city, with joshua trees, desert tortoise habitat, washes and mountain views, and they are essentially free of crowds. Visits suit those comfortable with unmarked terrain and self-sufficiency.
Amenities
- Dispersed desert recreation with no developed facilities
- Joshua tree, cholla and Mojave habitat
- Informal routes and washes for walking
- No water, restrooms, signage or marked trails in most areas
Things to Do
- Walk or explore open desert on established routes
- Look for Mojave desert wildlife and plants
- Photograph desert and mountain scenery away from the city
Who This Is Best For
Self-sufficient desert walkers, naturalists and photographers comfortable with unmanaged terrain.
Parking Information
Access is by informal roadside pull-offs on the surrounding highways. There are no formal lots or facilities.
Seasonal Information
Year-round in principle, but only practical from late autumn through spring. Summer heat in open desert is dangerous, and dirt routes become impassable after rain.
Heat & Safety
These are unmanaged desert areas with extreme heat, no water, limited cell coverage and flash flood risk in the washes. Desert tortoises are protected by law and must not be handled or disturbed. Carry ample water, avoid summer afternoons and let someone know your route.
