Outer Clark County, Clark County
Mesquite, Las Vegas
A resort and retirement town in northeastern Clark County
Mesquite is an incorporated city in the far northeastern corner of Clark County, near the Virgin River and the borders of Arizona and Utah. Once a small farming and railroad community, it grew into a modest resort and retirement town with golf courses, RV resorts and a handful of hotel-casinos that draw travelers between Las Vegas and southern Utah. Its low elevation, warm winters and small population make it a common retirement destination.
History & Local Character
Mesquite developed in the late nineteenth century as an agricultural settlement along the Virgin River and later became a stop on the railroad and the highway between Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. The city incorporated in 1984, and the opening of casino resorts and golf courses in the 1990s transformed it into a destination for travelers and winter residents.
Neighborhoods & Communities
Mesquite is a compact city of residential neighborhoods, RV and golf communities, and a small commercial core along Mesquite Boulevard near I-15. Its outlying communities — Bunkerville to the east, and the Virgin River valley beyond — are unincorporated areas of Clark County rather than parts of the city.
Housing & Real Estate
Mesquite offers some of the lowest housing prices in Clark County, with a mix of single-family homes, active adult communities, and recreational properties. Golf-course and 55+ communities are a large part of the market, and inventory is limited relative to the Las Vegas Valley.
Restaurants & Shopping
Dining is concentrated along Mesquite Boulevard and in the city's hotel-casinos, with a mix of casual cafes, diners, golf club restaurants and chain dining serving residents and highway travelers.
Schools & Education
Mesquite's public schools belong to the Clark County School District, and the city also has a campus presence from Nevada institutions. Because the community is small and distant from the valley, school choice is more limited than in the Las Vegas area.
Parks & Recreation
The city maintains neighborhood parks, a community recreation center and sports fields, and the Virgin River corridor provides access to riverside recreation. The area is also a base for exploring the red rock country around the Moapa Valley and Valley of Fire State Park.
Transportation & Accessibility
Mesquite sits directly on I-15, roughly 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas, and is a common overnight stop between Las Vegas and St. George, Utah. The city has a small general aviation airport, and there is no fixed-route transit comparable to the valley's RTC network.
Local Businesses
The local economy is built around hospitality and gaming, golf and recreation, healthcare for a large retiree population, retail serving highway travelers, and construction and trades supporting continued residential growth.
