Henderson & Southeast Valley, Clark County
Henderson, Las Vegas
Nevada's second-largest city, in the southeast Las Vegas Valley
Henderson is an incorporated city in Clark County and the second-largest city in Nevada, sitting in the southeast corner of the Las Vegas Valley against the McCullough and River mountains. It grew from a wartime industrial town into a large suburban city with a strong concentration of healthcare, manufacturing and technology employers, along with some of the valley's most established master-planned communities. Henderson is made up of distinct areas — Green Valley, Green Valley Ranch, Anthem, Seven Hills, Inspirada, Lake Las Vegas, Cadence and the historic Water Street District — rather than a single downtown core.
History & Local Character
Henderson was founded in 1941 around the Basic Magnesium plant, built to supply magnesium for the war effort, and the city was incorporated in 1953. After the plant closed, the site was converted to industrial use and the city shifted toward residential growth, expanding through the 1980s and 1990s with the planned Green Valley community and its successors. The historic core along Water Street, once the town's main commercial street, has been redeveloped into the Water Street District with restaurants, breweries and events.
Neighborhoods & Communities
Henderson's communities include Green Valley, Green Valley Ranch, Anthem, Seven Hills, Inspirada, MacDonald Highlands, Lake Las Vegas, Cadence, Tuscany Village, Whitney Ranch, Black Mountain, Mission Hills, the Water Street District, Sun City Anthem and Sun City MacDonald Ranch. These are neighborhoods, master-planned communities and 55+ communities within the incorporated City of Henderson — not neighborhoods of the City of Las Vegas.
Housing & Real Estate
Henderson is generally the higher-priced side of the valley, with established neighborhoods in Green Valley and Seven Hills, guard-gated and custom homes in MacDonald Highlands and around Lake Las Vegas, and newer construction in Cadence and Inspirada. The Water Street District has added townhomes and apartments within walking distance of restaurants and events.
Restaurants & Shopping
Dining clusters around Green Valley Ranch and The District at Green Valley Ranch, along Eastern Avenue and Horizon Ridge, at Lake Las Vegas, and in the Water Street District, where locally owned restaurants and breweries anchor the historic core. Henderson has a strong concentration of neighborhood restaurants and cafes alongside the larger shopping-district chains.
Schools & Education
Henderson schools are part of the Clark County School District, with widely used campuses in Green Valley, Coronado and Foothill areas and a number of highly regarded high schools. Nevada State University and Touro University Nevada are both located in Henderson, and the College of Southern Nevada operates a Henderson campus.
Parks & Recreation
Henderson operates an extensive parks and trail system, including Cornerstone Park, Heritage Park, the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve, Acacia Demonstration Gardens, Mission Hills Park and the River Mountains Loop Trail, which connects Henderson to Lake Mead and Boulder City. The city is also the gateway to Lake Las Vegas outdoor recreation.
Transportation & Accessibility
Henderson is connected to the rest of the valley by I-215, I-11 and US-95, with Lake Mead Parkway and Boulder Highway as its main north-south corridors. Harry Reid International Airport is roughly 15 to 25 minutes away depending on the neighborhood, and the River Mountains Loop Trail provides a 34-mile paved cycling route around the city's eastern edge.
Local Businesses
Henderson's economy includes healthcare systems, manufacturing, logistics, and a growing technology and professional services sector, along with a large base of locally owned restaurants, retail shops, contractors and medical practices serving established neighborhoods.
