Downtown Las Vegas and the Arts District Continue Their Business Revival
LAS VEGAS, NV — Downtown Las Vegas and the adjacent Arts District have become the city's center of independent business over the past decade, as restaurants, breweries, galleries, venues and housing have filled buildings that were empty a generation ago.
Fremont East and the Casino Core
Fremont East, designated as an entertainment district in 2007, grew into the valley's most concentrated strip of locally owned bars, restaurants and music venues. Circa Resort & Casino opened on Fremont Street in 2020, adding a new resort to the historic downtown casino corridor and bringing additional foot traffic to surrounding blocks.
Symphony Park and the Arts District
Symphony Park, built on former rail yards, is anchored by the Smith Center for the Performing Arts, which opened in 2012, along with the Discovery Children's Museum and medical facilities nearby. To the south, the Arts District — nicknamed 18b — filled its warehouse blocks with breweries, coffee roasters, galleries and studios, and the monthly First Friday festival has brought large crowds to the district since 2002.
Housing and Adaptive Reuse
Downtown's revival has been accompanied by residential development, with apartment and loft projects added around Symphony Park, Ogden Avenue and the Arts District, and older commercial buildings converted to residential and creative uses. That housing has in turn supported the restaurant, bar and retail businesses that now operate seven days a week.
What to Watch
Continued growth depends on filling remaining vacant parcels, adding everyday retail and grocery options, and addressing street-level issues along the district's edges. Public investment in streetscapes, civic facilities and the medical district remains a factor in how quickly those gaps close.
